The captain who was involved in the boat mishap on the Essequibo River on March 8 has had his licence suspended pending investigations that are currently being conducted by the Maritime Administration Department (MARAD).
The boat is currently impounded at Parika.
On March 8 a chaotic situation broke out on the Essequibo River when a passenger boat en route to Parika collided with a fishing vessel. The incident occurred around 17:00 hours just off Wakenaam Island. According to information received, the boat negotiated a turn then collided with a fishing boat.
Both of the vessels started to take in water and sank shortly after. Passengers were wearing safety jackets and no one drowned. They were rescued by another boat that was passing and taken to Parika before boarding another rescue boat.
All the victims were accounted for and there were no major injuries. However, people lost their phones and valuables. Passengers on the boat are thankful for their survival.
Meanwhile, Chairman of the Parika/Supenaam Speedboat Owners Association Curtis Adams said that he is grateful that nothing worse happened.
