Days after production was halted following mechanical issues at the Guyana Sugar Corporation’s (GuySuCo) Uitvlugt estate, grinding operations resumed yesterday, according to Communications Officer Angela Abraham-Parks.

With the issues resolved, she said that production for this crop is moving full speed ahead. The estate has been given the target to produce at least 25 per cent of the sugar expected from this crop.

The corporation has set a target to produce some 21,000 metric tonnes of sugar in this first crop.

On Saturday last, production stopped at the estate subsequent to mechanical failure of the #1 mill turbine gearbox in the factory.

Abraham-Parks in a letter to Stabroek News earlier this week, explained that immediately after the problem was detected the technical team kicked into action and commenced the required repairs at a fabrication workshop.

With the problem resolved, Abraham-Parks disclosed that some 600 punts of cane were scheduled to be crushed and that the process has started.

Her explanation came in response to public statements made by former APNU+AFC official Mervyn Williams on his social media page.

Refuting comments that GuySuCo was planning to dispose of its canes, the corporation said the allegations made by Williams were the furthest from the truth. He had alleged that the corporation was aiming to dispose of some 300 punts of cane.

“The experts within the Corporation are testing the cane every day to determine the purity level which will help to make production decisions. However, at no time did the Executive Manager consider dumping any of these canes and thus we are shocked that a non-expert at sugar production can arrive at such a conclusion,” Abraham-Parks stated in the letter on behalf of the corporation.
