A new non-governmental organisation that aims to assist cancer patients throughout treatment, including by providing financial aid, was launched on Saturday.
The launching of the Guyana Cancer Society (GSC) was held at MovieTowne, on the East Coast Demerara, where its President, Dr Sharir Chan, said the Non-Governmental Organisation will focus specifically on an agenda that seeks to eliminate cervical cancer in Guyana through testing, therapy, and treatment referrals.
Patients who are unable to cover the costs of surgery or medical expenses will have access to financial assistance as well as legal aid reference and counseling, among several other services.
Education is also a priority of the organisation, which will continuously conduct outreaches to educate the public about cancers and how one can avoid a positive screening. During these outreaches, the Cancer Society also plans to conduct wellness tests and to also teaching communities about the importance of living in a clean and sustainable environment.
“This initiative will complement institutions and organisations working to provide counselling, information on cancer prevention, therapy and medication for those affected by cancer,” he said.
United States Ambassador to Guyana Sarah-Ann Lynch, who spoke at the event, noted the importance of having organisations such as the cancer society that focus on prevention, early detection and effective treatment in Guyana.
“It is important for the families of cancer patients to receive support and attention. I believe that the Guyana Cancer Society will work tirelessly in the fight against cancer,” she added.
Minister of Health Dr Frank Anthony also noted the importance of such an NGO in Guyana and added that the goal of eliminating cervical cancer is an achievable as it along with breast cancer are caused by viruses.
However, he said education on prevention and treatment is inadequate while noting that the society is filling this critical gap.
Executive members of the Cancer Society include Chan, Meer Khan, Mark Reddi, Navindranauth Rambaran, Jason Ramcharran, Surujpaul Singh, Desiree Ross – all doctors – along with Sharon Rodriques-Alguram, Asif Owal and Sasha Hatim.
