With the festival of colours just a from days away, the Altruists Youth Group of Spring Garden, Region Two, last week hosted “Sangeet Sandhya,” setting the mood for the grand celebration on March 18.
The cultural evening was held at the Badrinauth Ashram in Spring Garden and featured dances, holi songs, chowtals, Kabir, Jogeera and Bartaals.
Mahindra Sharma, speaking on behalf of the youth group, said that the evening was planned to commemorate Phagwah. He said since the youth group was formed in May, 2019, it has been observing holidays from the three major faiths in Guyana.
Sharma said the youth group was formed to touch as many lives on the Essequibo Coast by promoting cultural and social activities amongst youths. Reaching out to the vulnerable is also a part of the group’s remit as well.
“Due to the pandemic many of our activities had to be called off but members decided that this year we will try our best to celebrate Phagwah and we hosted the show,” Sharma said.
During the cultural evening, youths were allowed to socialize and also take part in the stage show.
Messages on Phagwah were shared and seven curries were available. The event was free and was open to the public under strict Covid-19 guidelines. Since the launch of the group several activities have been held, including a Mash contest, a spelling bee, and Shivratri celebrations.
