Convict serving life sentence gets four more years over ganja

Convicted John Caesar, who is currently serving a life sentence, was yesterday sentenced to four years imprisonment and fined $2.5 million after he was admitted to being in possession of a quantity of narcotics at the Mazaruni prison.

Caesar, 39, appeared before Magistrate Crystal Lambert at the Bartica Magistrate’s Court, where he pleaded guilty to the possession of narcotics for the purpose of trafficking charge. Caesar was subsequently sentenced and also ordered to pay a fine of $2,587,500.

The police, in a statement yesterday, said that around 07.25 hrs last Thursday, prison officers performing their duties observed Caesar walking towards the security block.

He had a five gallon bottle in his hands.

According to the police, a police rank called out to Caesar but he ignored them and continued walking. “The prison rank caught up to him and enquired about the contents of the bottle he had in his hand and he stated that it was water,” statement said.

The rank then relieved Caesar of the bottle after which he escorted him to the office, where the bottle was examined.

The police said the bottle contained a quantity of leaves seeds and stems, suspected to be cannabis, along with three cellular phones, three cellular phone chargers, 20 packs cigarettes and one earpiece.

Caesar was escorted to the Bartica Police Station, where the narcotics were weighted in his presence. The narcotics amounted to 3 kilogrammes.

In October, 2018, Caesar was handed a life sentence for the attempted murder and robbery of businesswoman Dhanwantie Phulchand in an attack at the City Mall.

His partner, Marissa George, who was also convicted for the crime was sentenced to 15 years imprisonment.

Prior to being sentenced, Caesar was also charged with the murder of Linden shop owner Romel Edison Gomes.

On March 12, 2018, Gomes, a father of one, of Lot 53 Wismar Housing Scheme, Linden, was found in his shop in a pool of blood with his hands bound and a kerchief tied around his mouth.
