A total of over one tonne of cocaine and cannabis was seized last year by police ranks.
Commissioner of Police (ag) Nigel Hoppie recently said 536 kilogrammes of cocaine were interdicted during police operations in 2021, which resulted in 49 persons being charged,
Hoppie provided the statistics during his remarks at the Guyana Police Force (GPF) Annual Officers’ Conference last week.
In relation to cannabis, Hoppie said last year 589 kilogrammes were seized, from which 389 cases were made. A total of 419 persons were charged as a result.
Additionally, Hoppie said eradication operations throughout the country resulted in 131 fields of cultivated marijuana, with an estimated weight of 2.8 million kilogrammes, being destroyed.
Quantities of dried cannabis, which weighted 383,000 kilogrammes, were also found and destroyed, he added.
