PhotosHibernia Mandir hosts Phagwah Chowtaal SamelanBy Stabroek News March 17, 2022 The Guyana Hindu Dharmic Sabha Essequibo Coast Praant on Sunday last hosted its Annual Phagwah Chowtaal Samelan at the Hibernia Mandir, in Region Two. Participating in this year’s Chowtaal singing were members from the Cotton Field, Airy Hall, Spring Gardens, Reliance, Affiance, Johanna Cecilia, Hibernia and Maria’s Lodge mandirs. President of the Essequibo Coast Praant, Pandit Kaydar Persaud, said that the event was organised with the COVID-19 pandemic in mind. He noted that the Chowtaal Samelan is an annual event that kick starts Phagwah celebrations in the Pomeroon-Supenaam region and usually fosters unity and togetherness. Persaud added that he was satisfied with the level of participation given the current pandemic. “We in Essequibo always look forward for Chowtaal Samelan before the burning of Holika, and we always come together and sing,” he said. Persaud also said that he has seen growing Chowtaal circles as a clear indication that a growing number of persons are interested in the artform. He, therefore, encouraged leaders to continue to practice the singing of Chowtaal, Ulara and Holi songs through the festive season. During the festival of colours, mandirs are usually involved in the singing of Chowtaal and the clashing of “Jaals”. In photo mandir members are seen taking part in the Chowtaal samelan.Comments
