Former cane cutter Warren Dennis, who back in 2017 chopped a woman and severed her left wrist, is now awaiting sentencing after admitting that he attempted to murder her.
At his arraignment on Thursday, the 48-year-old man pleaded guilty to chopping the mother of three with a cutlass about her body on April 23, 2017, at Beterverwagting (BV), East Coast Demerara.
Prosecutor Cicelia Corbin told the court that following a disagreement, the cutlass-wielding Dennis attacked and chopped the woman to her face, shoulders and left hand, severing her wrist.
Presiding Judge Simone Morris-Ramlall has ordered a probation report and impact statement from the victim, and has deferred sentencing until March 31.
In his address to the court, the unrepresented Dennis in a seemingly tearful appeal, begged the judge to be merciful, while claiming that he was sorry for what he had done.
“Ow please fuh mercy my Honour,” he asked even as he also sought the forgiveness of the victim, her family and his.
He claimed he was “frustrated” at the time, which he said was the reason for his attack on the victim.
“Ah din know wah else fuh do,” was what he offered to the court as his resolve before going on to ask the judge for an opportunity to make it right with the virtual complainant.
He then also submitted for the Court’s consideration his mother, whom he said is blind.
After chopping the complainant, Prosecutor Corbin said that Dennis left her for dead in a trench, before fleeing the scene.
He was later handed over to police by his brother, while relatives rushed the injured woman to the Georgetown Public Hospital, where she had been admitted for some time after.
Dennis has been on remand since his incarceration in 2017.
