Normal passenger capacity returns to Route 50 mini-buses but Covid related fares not readjusted

Dear Editor,

Something needs to be done about the drivers of Route 50 Berbice to Georgetown, hire cars from Berbice to Georgetown and route 56 Rosignol to New Amsterdam. During the height of Covid in 2020 it was mandated that hire cars from Berbice to Georgetown can only carry 3 passengers because of social distancing, the buses had to carry less also. So all of the above hiked up their fares. The cars began to take $1500 from Berbice to Georgetown to cover for the one excluded passenger, (before the fare was $1000), the Route 50 buses used to take $800 from Berbice to Georgetown and they raised it to $1000, then the Route 56 buses used to take $300 and they began to take $400. During that time how things were that is understood. However after the government relaxed the Covid restrictions and permitted public transportation providers to be able to carry full capacity, these prices still remain in place, even though they have returned to carrying maximum capacity. The Route 50 buses have returned to overloading the buses and still take $1000 like if you’re begging a drop. When it comes to the privileged 56 Route bus drivers they would have been gifted the reduction in bridge fare prices from $2200 to $1900 and they still refuse to readjust their prices to $300. I ask whatever minister that’s in charge to look into this as now all Covid restrictions are non-existent but the fares continue to plague everyday traveling Guyanese.

Sincerely,

Brian Clementson
