Olympian, Aliyah Abrams recorded Guyana’s best performance after finishing fifth in yesterday’s final of the women’s 400m at World Indoor Athletic Championships being staged in Serbia.
She clocked 52.34s in the race which was won by Olympic gold medalist, Shaunae Miller-Uibo who ran a season’s best 50.31s.
Abrams’ campaign ended in a bittersweet manner since en route to the finals, she clocked a faster time (51.57s) and set the women’s 400m record for a South American quarter miler at an Indoor event.
After placing second in heat two in 52.34s to Poland’s Natalia Kaczmarek (52.22s), Abrams returned to the blocks and ran sub 52s to book her place in the final eight.
Meanwhile, Guyana’s other representative did not fare so well in their respective events.
Aliyah’s sister, Jasmine, placed sixth in heat 2 on Friday of the women’s 60m in 7.36s as her campaign at the three-day event ended.
Quamel Prince finished sixth of six starters in heat one in the 800m as his time at the games expired in a pedestrian 1:55.85s.
Guyana’s other representative at the event, sprinter Travis Collins, finished seventh in the 60m men’s semi-final one in 6.67s after winning his heat in 6.66s.
The three-day event concludes today in the Serbian capital of Belgrade.
