Local and Caribbean squash stalwart Nicolette Fernandes clinched the Guyana Squash Association (GSA) Senior Women’s Championship, besting former winner Ashley Khalil 3-0 yesterday at the Georgetown Club facility.
Fernandes, a former Caribbean champion, stormed to the early advantage claiming the first set 11-5. Her lead was then doubled following another comprehensive display in the second set where she prevailed 11-2.
Fernandes, 38, then sealed the championship, as she stormed to the clean sweep following an 11-3 showing in the third set.
Taylor Fernandes defeated Gabrielle Fraser in straight sets in the third place playoff.
An 11-7 showing in the opening set propelled Taylor Fernandes into the proverbial driver’s seat. Although the second set proved to be much more competitive, Taylor Fernandes secured the 2-0 advantage following a 14-12 effort.
The win was then sealed as she once again overcame her opponent 12-10. Meanwhile, the men’s final is scheduled to occur today at the same venue.
