Patients who are suffering from advanced chronic kidney diseases will soon be able to benefit from dialysis within Region Two.
This was disclosed by Minister of Health Dr. Frank Anthony during his recent visit to the Pomeroon-Supenaam region.
Dr. Anthony said that currently the Ministry is looking for space in the compound of the Suddie Public Hospital to establish a dialysis centre. As announced in this year’s budget, patients will be given $600,000 annually to help offset their medical expenses.
He said the Ministry of Health has recognized the burden patients are facing in travelling outside of the region to access the service privately. He said the Government is therefore aiming to decentralize all of its services and as such Region Two residents would soon be able to access dialysis within their own region.
Regional Health Officer Dr Ranjeev Singh said he is happy for a centre in the region. He said that many patients in Region Two require such service and often have to travel to the city to access same.
One patient, Richard Gobin told this newspaper that he would spend close to $80,000 to venture to Georgetown to access the treatment. He related that a session will also cost around $15,000 and he is currently unemployed.
