A 28-year-old mason was yesterday remanded to prison over the murder of Guyana Defence Force medic, Chavez Mangal.
Nazim Persaud of Good Hope, Squatting Area, East Coast Demerara (ECD), appeared at the Vigilance Magistrate’s Court before Magistrate Fabyo Azore when the charge was read to him. Persaud was not required to plead and was remanded to prison.
The matter was adjourned until the 13th of May, 2022.
Mangal was fatally stabbed during the wee hours of March 14th whilst celebrating his sister’s wedding at Good Hope, ECD on the said date.
There was a commotion around 12.30 hrs at the wedding house after a relative of the deceased objected to a group of four men harassing girls who were dancing at the celebration. Annoyed by the objection, the men launched an attack. It was during the commotion that Mangal was stabbed.
The police said preliminary investigations revealed that one of the suspects had approached the DJ enquiring about the music which had been stopped. An eyewitness told police that after the music stopped, others gathered at the DJ’s booth and during that time Mangal’s assailant pulled a knife from his waist and stabbed him in the upper right region of his chest.
The eyewitness told police that he confronted Mangal’s assailant and was also stabbed in his left hand, while another of the quartet threw a bottle at him.
According to the police, Mangal lost consciousness and was picked up and rushed to Dr. Balwant Singh’s Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.
