An East Canje Berbice man died while another is in serious condition at the Georgetown Public Hospital after they were struck by a canter while on a motorcycle along the New Amsterdam Public Road on Tuesday evening.
Dead is Joshua Inshanally, 31, of Lot 15 Adelphi, East Canje, Berbice. The injured man is Karran Rambharat, 28, of Lot 55 West Canefield, East Canje. They were on motorcycle, CL 327.
According to information gathered, the driver of the motor lorry, GWW 9178, Anil Khandhai, 27, was arrested following the accident.
Stabroek News was told that Khandhai was proceeding along Main Street, New Amsterdam when he alleged that the motorcycle, which Inshanally was riding with pillion rider, Rambharat, swerved into the path of his vehicle and collided with the front left portion of the lorry.
This newspaper was told that Inshanally and Rambharat, who are both electricians attached to the New Amsterdam Public Hospital, fell on the road and sustained injuries to their heads and bodies.
They were both picked up in an unconscious condition and taken to the New Amsterdam Public Hospital where they were eventually transferred to the Georgetown Public Hospital.
Stabroek News was told that Inshanally succumbed moments after arriving at the city hospital.
Rambharat has since been admitted in a serious but stable condition. A relative yesterday said that the young man sustained “several head injuries” but they are hopeful that he will recover fully.
Meanwhile, according to a police source, a breathalyzer test was conducted on the driver of the motor lorry which read .13 micrograms. Both vehicles have since been lodged at the Central Police Station.
