West Demerara giant Pouderoyen FC thrashed traditional rival Uitvlugt by a 4-1 scoreline on Sunday in a pre-season engagement staged at the National Track and Field Centre, Leonora, West Coast Demerara.
Travis Bess, coach of the Pouderoyen outfit during a post-match comment was quoted as saying, “The team played with a high intensity, they fought for every possession but there is always room for improvement. Some of the players that stood out were Daniel Abrams, Obediah Heywood, Dwayne St. Kitts, and Ezam David, they had a huge impact on the game.”
Chad Mathews opened the scoring in the 15th minute for Pouderoyen. Racing onto a long pass emanating from the right side, Mathews raced down the centre of the penalty box and finished calmly past the advancing goalkeeper.
However, Uitvlugt levelled the proceedings in the 30th minute in the form of Kelvis Fraser. Intercepting an errant pass from Abrams to an intended teammate, Fraser uncorked a powerful effort into the back of the net from inside the area.
With the score remaining unchanged heading into the halftime interval, Pouderoyen retook the lead in the 48th minute compliments of St Kitts. It was a brilliant strike from the midfielder who latched onto a poorly headed clearance from a left side corner-kick, before unleashing a volleyed effort past the goalkeeper from the top of the 18-yard box.
The score then ballooned to 3-1 in the 62nd minute as Jeremy Waldron etched his name on the score sheet. It was a fortuitous conversion starting out as an attempted cross from the left side which inadvertently then sailed into the back of the net.
The eventual result was then concretised in the 90th minute via a Telmon Adolph conversion. Racing through the centre of the field, Adolph evaded the challenges of two defenders before finishing his effort down the centre of the net.
The team will continue their pre-season campaign against Buxton Stars on the 27th at the same venue.
