The fishing tragedy is a wakeup call

Dear Editor,

It took a tragedy of major proportions and some damning revelations unearthed, in the mishap involving the fishing vessel and crew, to now realize it cannot be business as usual. It has to be queried how could a company operate and be allowed to operate in such a reckless manner where it seems no proper oversight to ensure its operations, particularly as it relates to compliance with licensing regulations and safety measures, and other attendant protocols and procedures were in place, and strictly observed and adhered to. This tragedy is a wakeup call, not only for the fishing industry, but all other industries operating and taking for granted, matters in a casual manner until a crisis situation arises and then it is a scramble to put systems in place, which might just be too late. The public release of the BOI report is eagerly awaited.

Sincerely,

Shamshun Mohamed
