The Guyana Police Force (GPF) yesterday maintained its silence on allegations made by a policewoman, who has accused an attorney of assault and hurling racist insults at her.
The opposition People’s National Congress Reform (PNCR) on Friday called on the leadership of the GPF to ensure the matter was not “swept under the carpet,” while also urging that the policewoman, Shawnette Bollers, receives all the support she needs to overcome emotional distress.
Up to yesterday the GPF was still to respond to multiple queries about the case.
The PNCR on Friday released a copy of a March 24, 2022 letter written by Bollers’ attorney, Eusi Anderson, detailing his client’s allegations against attorney Nirvan Singh and her interest in having the matter prosecuted by the GPF.
Among other things, the letter alleges that on the night of March 20, 2022, Singh used a series of racist slurs, spat at her and chased Bollers from the property that she was assigned to guard.
The letter, which signaled that a lawsuit would be filed, suggested that the attorney offer the woman a written apology and to consider paying financial compensation.
Anderson yesterday said that he has not yet received a response from Singh. “Mr Singh has not yet responded to my letter but I am eager to hear from him and I have been actively engaging emissaries on his behalf,” he told this newspaper.
This newspaper was unable to contact Singh.
When asked what would happen if a response is not received, Anderson said that the letter does speak to seeking legal redress and that would be pursued.
In its statement, the PNCR called on the Women and Gender Equality Commission and the Ethnic Relations Commission to investigate the incident. It also called on the Guyana Bar Association to publicly condemn the conduct of the attorney and to impose appropriate sanctions. The party, which said it will be closely monitoring the situation, added that it also expects all of civil society to add its voice in condemnation.
