A man was yesterday sentenced to 50 months imprisonment and fined $215.1M after he pleaded guilty to possession of narcotics for the purpose of trafficking while his two accomplices were placed on $2M bail each after they denied the said charge.
Massiah Durant, 52; Shawn Lindie Snr, 44 and Shawn Lindie Jr, 29 appeared before Magistrate Wanda Fortune at the Linden Magistrate’s Court.
Durant was sentenced after he admitted to the charge while the Lindies pleaded not guilty and were placed on bail
The trio were arrested on Saturday after a joint operation by ranks of the Customs Anti-Narcotic Unit (CANU) and the Guy-ana Defence Force (GDF) Coast Guard unearthed 1580 pounds of cannabis in a house at De Veldt, Upper Berbice River.
The drug haul has a street value of $79 million.
CANU in a statement said during the operation, the officers searched a building that was occupied by several individuals including minors.
During the process, CANU said the officers discovered several parcels of suspected cannabis and the occupants of the building were arrested.
They were escorted to CANU Headquarters where the suspected narcotics tested positive for cannabis.
According to CANU, the cannabis seized is believed to be have been intended for transshipment to another territory.
