The Ministry of Health (MoH) may soon start to administer booster doses to children between the ages of 12 to 17, according to Minister of Health, Dr Frank Anthony.
In the his daily COVID update, the minister noted that following recommendations made by the US Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA), his ministry may soon start administering booster doses to adolescents.
“There is a recommendation from the CDC and the US FDA… that for persons 12 years, they can get a booster dose, so that’s something that we will also be looking at,” Anthony was quoted as saying.
The minister noted that the decision may be made because adolescents in Guyana are only being allowed to take the primary doses, that is, the first and second doses. “….because our population between 12 to 17, we’ve only been giving them the primary dose, that’s the first and second dose and now we’d probably have to consider whether we should administer the booster dose.”
Meanwhile, seven new COVID-19 cases were recorded out of 1,429 tests that were performed as of Thursday. The active cases now stand at 78.
The updated dashboard presented by the MoH states that four persons are in the intensive care unit, while eight are in institutional isolation with 66 persons in home isolation.
The death toll remains at 1,226.
