(Trinidad Guardian) – Seven months before school teacher Amar Deobarran murdered his wife Omatie Ramdial-Deobarran and then killed himself, he confessed to her that he had a child with another woman, with whom he wanted to start a new life.

But instead of ending his marriage peacefully, Deobarran and a female relative subjected Omatie to verbal and emotional abuse, which ended with her murder around 7.40 pm on Friday.

The murder-suicide occurred at their South Oropouche Trace, Barrackpore home and was witnessed by the couple’s eight-year-old son. Their 13-year-old daughter was upstairs when the attack occurred.

Deobarran, 41, died at the hospital after being found sitting at the side of a track, a quarter-mile from his home. He had ingested a poisonous substance.

Police said Omatie had filed for divorce on the grounds of infidelity and had obtained custody of their two children. The judge ordered Deobarran to move out of the house and stay in the mother’s house to the front. Deobarran requested four days to move out and this was granted by the judge.

However, on Saturday after receiving a document from the police, which was possibly a restraining order, Deobarran flew into a rage. He went to the apartment of his wife, situated behind his mother’s house.

Speaking to Guardian Media, Omatie’s father Ramdial Kanchan said he first learnt of his son-in-law’s affair two weeks ago when his daughter came to his home at Mohess Road, Debe and requested permission to come back to her childhood home to live.

“I tell her to come back but she and Amar were husband and wife. They had children so they should try to mend up things,” Kanchan recalled with tears in his eyes. “She told me she could not stay there. She said when she sitting in the hammock he would come out and knock the blade and tell her to get out the house,” Kanchan added.

He said the couple had been together for 14 years but he did not know they were unhappy.

Before she died, Omatie told her family it was more painful because her husband’s family had accepted the affair and the outside woman even paid $10,000 for surgery for one of Deobarran’s female relatives.

The Deobarran family has since apologised for his actions saying they never knew him to be violent.
