Cougars FC defeated Corriverton Links 2-1 when the third 592 Beer ‘Skills for Cash’ seven-a-side football tournament resumed Sunday evening at the Rosignol Community ground, West Coast, Berbice.
First-half conversions from Lomar Reid and Timothy Somersall proved to be decisive in securing the hard-fought result for Cougars.
Reid opened the scoring in the 30th minute, receiving the ball outside the penalty area and uncorking a powerful right-footed shot from 20 yards out, which settled into the net.
Somersall scored four minutes later in similar fashion. Racing down the flank, he blasted a powerful right-footed strike into the far corner from 24 yards out.
The score remained unchanged at halftime, however, upon resumption, Corriverton Links reduced the deficit in the 48th minute, through Hakim Jackson who scored from the penalty spot.
Corriverton were awarded another penalty in the 57th minute and, tasked once more with the responsibility from the 11-yard distance, Jackson went from ‘hero to zero’ after the custodian denied his effort brilliantly.
Cougars would repel the efforts of their foe in the remainder of the contest to secure the deserved victory. In the second encounter, Rosignol United gained a walkover from No. #42.
The tournament resumes Friday at the Victoria Community ground, East Coast Demerara with another doubleheader. The action will also continue at the same venue on Saturday before it recommences at the Rosignol Community ground on Sunday.
The event features teams from Berbice and East Coast Demerara communities. They are: Cougar, Rosignol United, Monedderlust United, Hope Town, Number 30 Village, Number 42 Village, Paradise United, Airy Hall, Mahaica, Ann’s Grove United, Victoria Kings United, Golden Stars, Paradise, and Melanie FC. Each team will be allowed three guest players.
The first prize is $300,000, with the second, third and fourth place prizes being $200,000, $100,000, and $50,000 respectively.
