Last month Shomari Wiltshire won the men’s singles title at the Guyana Squash Associations (GSA) national championships.

On Sunday he added the U19 boys’ singles title to his bulging collection of national titles defeating Samuel Ince-Carvahal in the final of the 2021 Woodpecker Products Junior National Championships.

The U19 girls singles title was won by Kirsten Gomes after her opponent Safirah Sumner was injured.

Wiltshire and Gomes won trophies dedicated to the late Colin Ming in recognition of his valued contribution to the sport and they will be known as the “Colin Ming Junior National Champions.”

Gomes also triumphed in the U17 category.

A special award, “Heart of a Champion” was presented to U13 boys singles champion Breno DaSilva for his attitude, sportsmanship and enthusiasm for the game,” a release from the Guyana Squash Association stated.

Nicholas Verwey, who placed third in the U19 singles, won the boys U17 singles while Sumner was adjudged the most improved female player.

In addition to her runner up position in the Girls U19 final, she also placed second in the U17 category and won the U15 singles. In brief remarks, GSA vice president David Fernandes remembered friends of squash who have passed away including the late Bobby Fernandes, the late Billy Fung-A-Fat and the late Colin Ming.

Fernandes said that they all gave much to the sport and the squash fraternity.

Robbie Fernandes of the sponsor Woodpecker Products, in handing out trophies to the winners, spoke of the hard work and unwavering, longtime support of founder and owner Luana Fernandes. Tournament Director, Deje Dias, thanked the sponsors, players and supportive parents for a successful week of play.

The championships were held this year since they were unable to be held last year owing to the pandemic.
