Justice Adrian Saunders, the President of the Caribbean Court of Justice (CCJ), is to address the annual dinner of the Guyana Bar Association tonight and is expected to speak on how this country’s accession to the court has advanced regional jurisprudence. Justice Saunders’ visit comes after the court presided over a series of cases from Guyana connected to the December 2018 motion of no confidence against the former government, the appointment of retired Justice James Patterson as Chairman of the Guyana Elections Commission and a raft of cases stemming from the March 2nd 2020 general elections which prompted major rulings. A release on Friday from the CCJ said that in his keynote address today, the CCJ President “intends to share some more views and expand on why and how he believes the choice Guyana has made, has advanced our Caribbean jurisprudence and has assisted in securing the rule of law in Guyana”. As part of his visit, Justice Saunders paid a courtesy call on President Irfaan Ali and was also due to meet Attorney General Anil Nandlall and Dr Carla Barnett, new Secretary-General of CARICOM. The release said that a courtesy call on the Leader of the Opposition would have been facilitated “but that post is now vacant”. During his brief visit, the CCJ President also participated in the University of Guyana’s student symposium on “Paths in the Legal Profession.” He was also due to hold discussions with Justice Yonette Cummings-Edwards, Chancellor (Ag) of the Judiciary of Guyana.
