A superb second innings century from Winston Forrester combined with a half-century and a five-wicket haul from Leon Johnson handed Georgetown Cricket Club (GCC) a 130-run win over Malteenoes Sports Club (MSC) yesterday.
Resuming the second day on 54 without loss and a lead of 57, GCC romped to 302 for four declared off 55.5 overs in their second innings before bowling out MSC for 175 in 49.5 overs in the GISE/Star Party Rentals/Trophy Stall first-division, two-day league.
Forrester converted his overnight 41 to 176 from just 165 balls while clubbing a whopping 27 boundaries, including two sixes before he was caught at mid-off off of Daniel Ross (2-37). His opening partnership with Navindra Persaud was also converted from 54 to 116 before Persaud was stumped off of Nichosie Barker (1-74) for 25 from 74 balls.
Mavindra Dindyal shared a 46-run stand with Forrester but was run out for 12. Guyana Jaguars captain, Johnson then joined Forrester and forged a 121-run union for the third wicket with Johnson hitting 10 fours and a six in his 47-ball 65. He too was dismissed by Ross.
Johnson returned with his leg-spin as MSC stared down a mammoth task and grabbed 5-31 while Persaud and Forrester rounded off an exceptional day with two wickets each.
MSC lost wickets periodically but teenaged, Mervin Permaul was left stranded on 47 from 84 balls. His captain, Shaquille Williams played positively during his 46-ball 38 but was eventually dismissed by his former St. Joseph High School classmate, Forrester.
Ross, batting at number 11, made 35 with five sixes before he was the last man dismissed and handing Johnson his fifth wicket.
At the Eve Leary Ground, Police were routed for 77 in their second innings which lasted just 31.3 overs as leg-spinner, Steven Sankar picked up from where he left off in the first innings to return 3-19 and end with a match haul of 7-89. Sankar was supported by captain, Christopher Barnwell with 2-19 and left-arm spinner, Raj Nanan with 2-21. Ronsford Beaton, batting at number 10 top scored with 16 while Antony Adams was the only other batsman to reach double figures and was left on 14 not out.
In DCC’s chase, there looked to be a final twist in the match as off-spinner, Dwain Dick, ripped through the top order with 5-31 but the target was too easy for the defending champions who reached the target of 70 in 18.3 overs. Trevon Griffith top scored with 16 not out and Barnwell made 15 from six balls.
