A 14-year-old girl died on Sunday after the pedal bike she was on was struck by a speeding motorcyclist.

Dead is Makida Quick of Lot 668 Section ‘D’ Field, Sophia and a student of the Tucville Secondary School.

The man who struck the teenager down has been identified as Glenton Redman, 21, of Lot 1584 Section ‘E’ Field, Sophia.

According to police, the accident occurred about 12:30 hrs, at Section ‘E’ Field.

The police say that reports revealed that Quick was on her bicycle riding south along the eastern side of the Section ‘E’ Field, main access road, whilst Redman was speeding  on his motorcycle CK 7840 which he allegedly lost control of and struck the girl.  He was said to have been lying on the motorcycle at the time.

As a result of the impact, Quick was flung some distance into the air before falling into a nearby drain, while Redman fell on the road.

Both were picked up in an unconscious state and transported to the Georgetown Public Hospital’s Accident and Emergency Unit. Quick was pronounced dead on arrival.  Her body was escorted to the Memorial Gardens Mortuary where it currently awaits a post-mortem examination.

Redman, who the police say they suspect is not the holder of a provisional or driver’s licence, subsequently regained consciousness and is presently receiving medical attention under police guard.

Investigations are ongoing.

Melissa Vossey, the mother of the girl,  yesterday told Stabroek News that her daughter was heading to visit her grandfather who lives not far from where she was struck down. The mother also said that her daughter was not riding at the time, but instead, she was waiting for Redman to pass.

“She was going by she grandfather…she was riding a bicycle but at that time she didn’t riding she was waiting for him to pass. I was made to understand that the boy was lying down on the motorbike and riding and she was standing up in the corner and he lick she down…” said the woman.

Vossey said that this is not the first time she has lost a child. One of her sons was murdered back in 2019.

“My son Chesney was murdered in Tucville in 2019…a boy carry he to buy a motorbike and they rob he and bun he, throw acid on he skin then shoot”,  the grieving mother said.

Vossey is pleading with the public to assist her in any way possible with the funeral arrangements for her daughter. The woman can be contacted on 699-3076.
