Golden Grove and Melanie made winning starts under contrasting circumstances in the third 592 Beer ‘Skills for Cash’ seven-a-side knockout football tournament Sunday at the Victoria Community ground.
The youthful Golden Grove unit overcame Mahaica 2-1 in the feature clash of the evening. All three conversions occurred in the second half of the 60 minute encounter.
Kevan Garnett opened the scoring for Golden Grove in the 33rd minute. Lurking inside the penalty box, Garnett rose above his marker to direct his header into the back of the net, after latching onto a cross from an initial free-kick. However, Trevon Adams restored parity to proceedings, as he etched his name on the scorer’s sheet in the 42nd minute. Picking up the ball in the midfield area, Adams initiated a one-two passing combination, before storming onto the resulting through pass inside the penalty area, and slamming his right footed shot into the right hand corner.
Dexroy Culpepper fashioned the winner for Golden Grove in the 55th minute to seal their place in the next round. Sprinting onto a through pass which emanated from the centre of the field, Culpepper, upon entering the penalty area, calmly placed his shot beyond past the advancing goalkeeper.
Meanwhile, Melanie defeated Buxton via walkover in opening fixture. The event resumes on Thursday at the same venue with another round of matches. The other playing dates are the 17th, 24th and 30th.
The winner of the event will pocket $300,000, with the second, third and fourth place finishers receiving $200,000, $100,000, and $50,000 respectively.
