As Guyana’s oil and gas sector seeks to build, incrementally, on its accomplishments since the first oil find in May 2015, companies associated with the sector continue to roll out orientation and training programmes designed to position Guyanese to benefit more from openings in the sector.
Last week, the manpower recruitment company, El Dorado Offshore (EDO) executed a series of one-day job camps held in five regions in Guyana aimed at providing locals of all ages with access to skills in a range of disciplines that would better position them to remove barriers to securing employment opportunities in an expanding Guyana economy.
Information on the job camps received by the Stabroek Business indicates that more than five hundred persons from the various communities attended the respective Job Camps which offered sessions in various job application-related skills including preparing Resumes and Cover Letters. The company says that these areas were identified for instructional training, the company having previously had “issues” with such documents sent to it by Job Seekers. EDO says that part of the focus of these instructional sessions is on ensuring Job seekers do not lose out on opportunities on account of a lack of knowledge of how to present resumes when applying for jobs.
As part of the Job Camps EDO also undertook one-on-one discourses with job seekers seeking specific information on the criteria for securing offshore jobs.
While the company declined to comment directly in the immediate prospects of job offers arising out of the Camps it said that it found quite a few applicants who had satisfied the requirements for some jobs and that the company had already begun to ‘pull’ those applications for presentation to various clients
The company says that the initiative was successful insofar as it had discovered that there exists a diverse talent pool that employers could utilize.
And even as issues of local content and securing jobs for Guyanese become an increasingly focal point in the discourse regarding equipping Guyanese for jobs in various sectors, EDO says that it has taken the lead in reaching out to communities in interior regions of Guyana in order to provide residents of those communities with opportunities to benefit from jobs in the oil and gas sector.
The Company says that the types of positions that could become available to persons who benefitted from the Job Camps include jobs as Administrative Officers, Able-Bodied Seamen, Ordinary Sailors, Labourers, Human Resources Specialists, Health & Safety Security and the Environmental Specialists, Engineers and Technicians.
Asked by this newspaper if the initiative was a precursor to an imminent recruitment drive the company responded that it believed that it was crucial to ensure that job seekers were properly positioned to present “quality applications” for jobs.
