Twenty-four Guyanese doctors will soon be embarking on a six-month Chinese Medical Brigade specialist programme.
The opening ceremony for the programme was held yesterday at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) Resource Centre, and attendees included several Guyanese doctors and a delegation from the Chinese Medical Brigade.
Guyanese doctors, especially those from the hinterland regions will also be benefitting from this programme which will be taught both offline and online in Jiangsu, China.
According to the head of the Chinese Medical Brigade, Dr Duan Yunfei, the programme will be divided into two parts – three months will be for theoretical work, while another three months will be for practical work.
Chief Executive Officer (Ag) of GPHC, Robbie Rambarran, informed that the areas which will be focussed upon in the training are: nephrology, anaesthesia, orthopedics, obstetrics, gynecology, and pathology. He also stated that the GPHC and the Ministry of Health hope to fill the gap in nephrology and pathology, since there are not many doctors in that field.
The Chinese Ambassador to Guyana, Guo Haiyan, who was also at the ceremony stated that her government hopes to continue helping the citizens of Guyana in various aspects of achievement. She noted that the Chinese government, for quite some now, has been working to strengthen its cooperation with Guyana and the development of the nation’s healthcare system.
Minister of Health, Dr Frank Anthony, giving closing remarks, extended his gratitude towards the Chinese government and expressed the hope that the training in the various fields would advance the skills of the current doctors and in so doing, the quality of Guyana’s healthcare will improve.
