The 29-year-old accused in the stabbing of a four-year-old girl was yesterday charged with attempting to commit murder and was placed on $150,000 bail.
Padmini Dwarka, of Lot 185 Cemetery Road, Timehri, East Bank Demerara, appeared before Magistrate Judy Latchman at the Diamond/Golden Grove Magistrate’s Court.
Dwarka was not required to plead to the charge and the matter was adjourned to May 17.
According to a police report, on Sunday evening, the night of the incident, Dwarka, had returned to the house which she shared with the victim and the victim’s mother when the two women became embroiled in an argument.
As a result, the child’s mother picked her up and informed the suspect that she was leaving as she was frustrated with the repetitive arguments between them.
Dwarka then allegedly armed herself with a knife and lunged at the child’s mother in an attempt to stab her but ended up stabbing the child instead in the abdomen.
The suspect then escaped but on Tuesday she turned herself into police at the Timehri Police Station in the company of her lawyer.
The victim who is currently a patient at the Georgetown Public Hospital is listed as critical but stable.
