Golden Grove and Melanie will face-off in the semi-final round of the 592 Beer ‘Skills for Cash’ seven-a-side football tournament, following contrasting quarterfinal wins last evening at the Victoria Community ground.
Golden Grove bested Paradise (East Coast Demerara) by a 2-0 scoreline. Derick Thomas opened the scoring in the seventh minute, as two goals in the space of five minutes sealed the result for Golden Grove.
Lurking inside the penalty box, Thomas uncorked a first-time placed shot into the back of the net, after latching onto a cross following a right sided corner kick. The result was then sealed, as Adrian Gonsalves found the back of the net in the 12th minute.
Racing into the penalty area, Gonsalves slammed his effort into the far corner, after receiving a cross from the right side of the field. Meanwhile, Melanie bested Paradise (Berbice) 1-0.
Teshawn Gordon separated the two teams with a moment of individual brilliance. Storming down the right side of the field, Gordon upon entering the 18-yard area, unleashed a lobbed right footed effort, which sailed over the head of the goalkeeper, and settled into the left corner.
The event continues at the Rosignol ground on April 24. The second semi-final will pit Rosignol against Monedderlust. The resulting tournament victor will receive $300,000, whilst the second, third and fourth place finishers will pocket $200,000, $100,000, and $50,000 respectively.
