Six persons were taken into custody last Wednesday after a search of a Mahdia-bound minibus in which they were travelling unearthed over 40 pounds of cannabis with a street value of some $6 million.
Those in custody are the driver of the minibus, who has been identified as Nelvern Isaacs, 40, and five male passengers.
The Custom Anti-Narcotic Unit (CANU), in a press release, said that ranks conducted an intelligence-led operation during which the bus, which was carrying passengers and food supplies, was intercepted at Yarowkabra Village, Linden-Soesdyke Highway.
In total 19 parcels of suspected cannabis, concealed in pieces of sponge, were found during the subsequent search, the release added.
The suspects were escorted to CANU Headquarters, where the suspected narcotics tested positive for cannabis. The parcels were weighted and amounted to 19.5 kilogrammes.
The suspects are being processed for court.
