The 21-year-old man who allegedly fatally stabbed his co-worker in the mining camp they shared at the North West District (NWD), Region One, was remanded last week to prison.
Romel Pritchard, a gold miner of Barimanobo Village, Mabaruma, NWD, appeared virtually via Zoom at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan last Thursday.
Pritchard was not required to plead to the indictable charge and was remanded to prison until May 3rd 2022.
Police had initially reported that the fatal stabbing took place in the wee hours of Wednesday morning, 13th April, at Reserve Baramita, NWD.
It was also reported that the deceased, Roy Harry, 29, of Wauna, Mabaruma, NWD, and the accused were drinking alcohol at New Star Backdam in Baramita when an argument erupted over a female friend.
They left for their mining camp and thereafter got into a further argument which resulted in the accused (Pritchard) allegedly assaulting Harry and stabbing him with a knife.
Pritchard went to a mechanic who also works at the mining camp and related the matter to him, he also claimed that he was going to make a report to the Police Station but never did.
As soon as the mechanic heard what had taken place, he rushed over to the camp that the friends shared and saw Harry lying motionless on the ground with what appeared to be a stab wound to his chest. He then summoned the police via telephone.
As a result, ranks were dispatched and conducted further investigations. Escape routes were then monitored and at around 18:00 hrs the accused was apprehended whilst walking along a trail at Reserve, Baramita.
