Some members of the Lady Jaguars football team, preparing for the Concacaf Women’s U17 Championship in the Dominican Republic, were the victims of burglary at the Guyana Football Federation (GFF) National Training Centre, Providence on April 9th.
General Secretary of the GFF Ian Alves confirmed the unexpected and unfortunate episode, adding that an investigation has been launched into the matter.
He explained, “The matter is being investigated. People’s personal items went missing on the day and it is being investigated at the moment. The GFF is waiting on a response from the investigators. The incident happened on the [April] 9th.”
According to a source close to the programme, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, “The incident happened on Saturday 9th at the Training Centre. The team had double training which was from 10-12 in the morning and 4-6 in the afternoon. After finishing the afternoon session, and returning to the facility where their bags were kept, it was discovered that phones and money were missing from their backpacks.
“Everything was emptied out on the floor and on the beds. It was discovered that 11 phones were missing, 4 Apple IPhones, and seven Samsung Galaxies. The only things that remained were the chargers and the earpieces. The police were called and the investigation started. The GFF has told the players that the matter is still being investigated. The GFF is responsible for the security of the rooms when the teams are training.”
The team is currently preparing for the U17 championship, which is scheduled for April 23rd – May 8th. The Guyana team, which is scheduled to depart local shores April 26th, is projected to play group-E side Mexico in the round of 16 stage.
