Environment study for gas to shore scheme submitted

-60-day review process underway An environmental study was yesterday submitted by ExxonMobil’s subsidiary to the EPA for a US$1.3b gas to shore project which the government hopes will lead to vastly lower energy costs that would enable a spurt in manufacturing but doubts have persisted over execution capacity and whether a real feasibility study has been done.

President to invite Norton for talks on constitutional appointments

President Irfaan Ali  is to today formally write to Leader of the Opposition Aubrey Norton inviting him to a meeting to be held within the next two weeks, to discuss constitutional appointments which require consultations between the two.  “Sometime tomorrow he [Norton] will be in possession of a letter,” President Ali last evening revealed on the sidelines of the launch of Building Expo 2022.

Alexis Turpin freed on charge of murdering partner

After spending almost six years behind bars and facing two trials, Alexis Turpin was yesterday discharged of the 2016 murder of her partner, Sherwin Johnson, after a judge upheld a no-case submission made on her behalf.  Turpin had been jointly charged with her lover Stephon Barlow, for the July 2nd, 2016 fatal crow-bar beating of Johnson.

NSC issues statement in response to Hughes’ CARIFTA Games Facebook post

The National Sports Commission wishes to unequivocally debunk and condemn the malicious and spurious statement made by Nigel Hughes on Facebook that the National Sports Commission financially neglected the Carifta Games athletics team or refused to assist with payment of Covid tests and meals for an additional day.   It must be accepted that if the NSC assisted the CARIFTA Games teams with $3M to depart Guyana to participate in the Games, then it would have no difficulty with assisting $160,000 so that the athletes can return home if a request was made.  The post made by Nigel Hughes on Facebook could only be construed as a callous and disgraceful attempt to score cheap political points off the backs of young, innocent and talented national athletes.

Nandlall says PAC quorum change will aid accountability

Advancing that it augurs well for accountability in public spending, Attorney General (AG) Anil Nandlall SC has defended passage of the motion tabled by the government side of the National Assembly, which now requires five, as opposed to three persons to form a quorum for the holding of a Public Accounts Committee (PAC) meeting.

UNDP hands over rain gauges, measuring jars

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Ministry of Agriculture’s Hydro-meteorological Service yesterday signed a handover agreement for 45 rain gauges and 90 measuring jars to support Guyana’s sustainable disaster preparedness and response initiatives.
