A 21-year-old man was on Tuesday remanded to prison on the charge that he murdered his 19-year-old girlfriend, who was fatally stabbed.
Joel Spooner, of Lot 311 Craig, East Bank Demerara, appeared before Magistrate Judy Latchman at the Diamond Magistrate’s Court, where he was not required to plead to the charge that he murdered Shenese Walks.
The man was remanded to prison until May 17, 2022.
Police had reported that the fatal stabbing occurred between 15:30 hrs on April 12, 2022 and 11:45 hrs on April 13, 2022, when Walks’ body was found at the Craig apartment that the couple shared.
According to the police, Spooner claimed that on April 12, he and the mother of one had a misunderstanding when the woman reportedly armed herself with a knife. He claimed that he tried to take the knife away from her and she was subsequently stabbed.
Out of fear, he said, he locked the house and went away. However on April 13, at about 08:00 hrs, the man contacted two family members and related what occurred and they then escorted him to the Grove Police Station, where he was taken into custody.
Ranks acted on the information they received from Spooner and went to the house, where they found Walks lying on her back with a knife stuck in the left side of her neck.
Their landlord said that the couple had an argument two months prior to this fatal stabbing when the man allegedly assaulted her.
