Dear Editor,
What a joy it was to see the return of our beautifully crafted locally-made kites to the sky this Easter. To see the various patterns and colours, to hear the buzzing sounds of the “singing engines” as they danced and tugged at the strings held firmly in the hands of the excited children and adults too, was such a delight.
Speaking to a youngster – who was flying a kite in the field outside my home – he said that he made the kite himself, using ‘glammy’ cherry to paste it. Now that is what makes the Easter holidays for children in Guyana so special – making their kites, learning all the techniques of making the different types of loops – mounting, pulling or a combination of both – the length and weight of the tail etc.
A welcome return to one of our lovely Guyanese traditions.
Sincerely,
Joan Collins
