Cops destroy $45m in narcotics along Berbice River

The Guyana Police Force yesterday reported that during drug eradication exercises on Wednesday along the Berbice River a total of $45m in narcotics was destroyed. According to a statement from the force, a team led by an Assistant Superintendent conducted the exercise using the Force’s motor vessel Marine 6.

“Two plots of land (cannabis farms) were discovered along the Berbice River during the first part of the exercise. The farms measured approximately one acre each. About 10,000 plants in total were cultivated on the two farms, with the cannabis plants measuring between 1-5 feet in height, and with an average weight of 250 lbs.”

The estimated value of the eradicated cannabis at this location is approximately $7,500,000, the statement noted.

Both farms were destroyed by fire during the police’s exercise.

The police said  that as the team continued their exercise along the Berbice River, another plot of land with cannabis  was discovered at Gateroy Village “which was about six acres with approximately fifty thousand plants … ranging between one to six feet … in height with a weight of about 1,250 pounds, along with two makeshift camps.”

The estimated value of the eradicated cannabis at the farm at Gateroy Village is  $37,500,000.

The total weight of all the cannabis eradicated at both locations during the exercise on Wednesday is approximately 1,500 pounds and valued at  $45,000,000.

The force in their statement noted that back in February during an eradication exercise at Gateroy Village, Berbice River a cannabis field measuring approximately ten acres was discovered.

The estimated value of the cannabis that was found and destroyed during that exercise is approximately $90m.
