I had a letter today. It’s not often I would try and grace your columns with this exciting information, but, yes today I received an envelope – from the UK originally – wrap-sealed in a plastic sleeve. I mean, where else in the world do they take such care of your letters as to wrap them in an extra protective coating?
I was so excited, I tore it open. Inside (apart from my letter from the UK) was a real nice letter from – would you believe – the Postmaster General himself, telling me the sad story of how my letter had arrive (sic) damaged. In fact the forwarding post office has been advised of this problem and I am asked to let the sender know as well. Which – if I can find the sender – I will surely do.
It’s so nice to know that the Post Office is taking care of these things. I guess letters do get damaged in transit sometimes. I was very pleased to get the letter because it was about a credit card transaction that didn’t go through and the vendor was chasing me for his credit! Gosh – glad I got this! I might have lost my credit card otherwise.
But – there was something funny about the date. 15 January? I never used my card then? I checked back – no – but…. Then I looked again at the year. Not the date but the year. Would you believe? Not 2022 of course. But – how long does it take a letter to reach Guyana? Have a guess? Well, maybe three months: no, six months? Yes! Six months? You sure? How about a year? Well, that would be pretty quick in some cases. Guess again. More? More than a year? Two years? No! Never! More?
Well, I won’t keep you in suspense. Can you imagine my letter was dated February 2016??? Yes! Six years and two months to get my letter! I want to know, if I have the record? Has anyone else got a longer delivery time? And is this a World Record? It’s so nice that someone at the Post Office found my letter and delivered it, thank you so much.
