With the intention to ensure there is sustainability in its operations, the management of the Demerara Harbour Bridge Company’s Asphalt Plant is moving to procure a bitumen emulsion plant.
Plant Manager Rory Ramdas yesterday told Stabroek News that it is a move by the company to ensure they remain competitive and sustainable. He noted that the plant currently produces asphalt only.
The bitumen emulsion plant will ensure a steady supply of bitumen for asphalt production but will also allow them to retail the emulsion to road builders, generating a new stream of income.
Bitumen emulsion is the sticky black substance commonly referred to as tar. It is sprayed on to the road surface before the asphalt is applied and acts as a glue.
Ramdas said that they are working to have an agreement for supply by September and possibly have the plant installed by year end. However, he was quick to say that with the current supply chain challenges he will not commit to a timeline.
An advertisement in yesterday’s Sunday Stabroek invited bids for the supply, delivery and installation of a new Bitumen Emulsion Plant.
Interested bidders can obtain further information, inspect and purchase the bidding document at the Demerara Harbour Bridge Corporation Asphalt Plant at Garden of Eden.
All bidders are required to attend a mandatory pre bid meeting on April 28 at 9 am at the project site at Garden of Eden.
