Twenty-six-year-old Nicklous Singh of Abram Zuil, Region Two was yesterday remanded to prison on a charge of causing death by dangerous driving.
Singh was wanted by the police for over eight years in relation to the death of the then Rich-mond Courts Branch Manager, Chandanie Das.
He was arrested by police during an intelligence-led operation on Friday last. Singh made his appearance before Magistrate Esther Sam at the Charity Magistrate’s Court. He was not required to plead to the indictable charge.
The court heard that on August12, 2014 he drove in a dangerous manner on the Annandale Public Road around 22:30 hours resulting in the death of Das. Singh was allegedly unlicensed at the time and had collided with Das’ motor car. Das was from La Union, Region Two.
Before the charge was laid against the accused, a file was prepared in the matter and was sent to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions at which point an inquest was advised into the matter. The inquest was held and ten witnesses testified. The jurors found that Singh was criminally responsible for causing the death of Das. The matter was called by then magistrate Sunil Scarce on November 19, 2015. It was adjourned on several occasions as the accused did not show up.
