Rice farmers in Region Two can expect improved access dams in the coming months after the acquisition of two 80-horsepower John Deere tractors by the regional administration.
The keys of the 80-horsepower tractors were handed over to the Regional Chairperson Vilma De Silva by Minister of Local Government and Regional Development with Parliamentary responsibilities Nigel Dharamlall on Tuesday.
At the ceremonial handing over, Minister Dharamlall said that the tractors were purchased under the region’s capital budget. It will be used, he said, to further enhance access to dams leading to rice lands in the Region. The maintenance of the tractors will fall under the regional administration. “These tractors will benefit all and improve the lives of rice farmers, it will create more access,” Dharamlall was quoted as saying.
De Silva said the region was in need of the tractors and that they will be put to use specially to upgrade the dams in various communities. She noted that rice farmers had made the request and the region had budgeted for the equipment. Witnessing the handing over ceremonies were Regional Vice-Chairman Humace Oodit and Regional Executive Officer Susannah Saywack.
