In an effort to enhance the female component of cricket in the capital, the Georgetown Cricket Association (GCA) will host its first-ever female youth camp this month.
According to the GCA, “This camp, which is for females between the ages of 12 to 18-years-old, will focus on identifying and developing the talent of females who have the desire to learn and the passion to play representative cricket at the highest level.”
The camp is open to females who are attending school or residing in the geographical boundaries of Georgetown or are registered with clubs affiliated to the association.
Speaking to Stabroek Sport yesterday, President of the GCA, Neil Barry snr., said that this area has been neglected for far too long and it was optimal to do a standalone female camp.
“It is an area which we feel has been neglected for far too long but we understand the logistical difficulties with coordinating female cricket in conjunction with a male programme so we took the decisive step to do a female programme where we can focus on the female development and starting from the very young age of 12 so we can bring up a new type of female cricketers and to promote a different developmental environment,” he said.
Barry added, “We are of the view that in our society we do not understand the differences in having a male programme and a female programme, there are certain logistical and societal issues… so we are at the juncture right now where we can launch the programme where the first phase will be during the month of May.”
