Khan wins GAICO-sponsored second Grand Prix tournament

Candidate Master Taffin Khan with seven and one half points, was the winner of the second Gaico-sponsored Guyana Chess federation (GCF) Grand Prix tournament which ended Monday.

Khan won seven of his eight matches, drawing with second place finisher Loris Nathoo.

Nathoo, who finished with six and one half points, won five and drew three of his matches.

Third place went to FIDE Master Anthony Drayton with five and one half points.

Drayton, winner of the first Grand Prix Tournament, lost to Khan and drew with Nathoo.

Drayton also lost to veteran player and Stabroek News columnist Errol Tiwari in the second round.

There was another uupset inround five when 14-year-old rising star Pooja Lam defeated Justino Da Silva Women’s Champion Sasha Shariff (5 points) won the trophy for best female player in the tournament.

The trophy for best junior female went to Lam (4.5 points).

Jessica Callender (5 points) received the trophy for the best U20 player.

Medals were also awarded to the fourth to 10th place finishers in Roberto Neto, Tiwari, Shariff, Callender, Jarell Troyer, Lam and Frankie Farley respectively.

A total of 27 players competed in the four-day tournament resulting in five junior players making the International Chess Federation (FIDE) rated players list as of May 1st, 2022.

The players are Junior Champion Ricardo Narine, Ronan Lee, Oluwadare Oyeyipo,  Callender and Lam.

Meanwhile the national qualifying tournaments for the Open and women’s category will begin this weekend at the National Stadium Providence. Interested persons can register only on guyanachess.org. The deadline for registration is May 6th at 5 pm.
