The Guyana Harpy Eagles players wore black arm bands yesterday as a mark of respect for the passing of West Indies and fellow Eagles, Veerasammy Permaul’s mother.

However, the scheduled second day of the three-day practice match was washed out after consistent rainfall in the capital city of Georgetown, saw not a ball being bowled.

The body of Waynumattie Permaul called ‘Dataley, mother, of the left arm spinner, Permaul was found Friday buried in a shallow grave at Kilcoy, East Berbice.

Cricket West Indies, Guyana Cricket Board, West Indies Players Association, Berbice Cricket Board and Albion Community Centre have all issued statements on the passing of the 52-year-old woman.

“We thought it was only appropriate that we observed a moment of silence and wore the black arm band to mark the respect to our dear brother, Veerasammy Permaul and his family having lost him mom, during this difficult time we wish him strength and we know him over the years to be a very strong individual. I am hoping that he can recover from this as soon as possible,” said head coach Esuan Crandon.

On Monday, it was the bowlers that got the better of the batsmen at the Everest Cricket Club as Paul XI were bundled out for 177 in 72 overs while Johnson XI were shaking at 18 for three at the close of play.

Currently at the crease is the experienced pair of Leon Johnson and Vishaul Singh who are on three.
