North East La Penitence, Showstoppers, and Melanie, earned respective hard fought quarterfinal berths, when the Round of 16 section in the 4th Magnum Independence Cup concluded yesterday at the National Park tarmac, Thomas Lands, Georgetown.
East Coast Demerara giant, Melanie, bested East Front Road 3-1. Malachi Granum crafted a brace in the ninth and 14th, while Teon Stewart added to the score in the 17th minute. For the loser, Meshach Barrat found the back of the net in the 16th minute.
Similarly, Showstoppers bested Agricola 2-0. Olvis Mitchell, and Kevin Edghill netted in the 15th and 21st minute respectively. Meanwhile, North East La Penitence edged Beterverwagting (BV) 1-0. Carl Tudor separated the two sides with a 14th minute conversion.
The event continues tomorrow with the quarterfinal round of matches at the same venue. Up to press time, the remaining matches in the round of 16 section were underway. The winner of the tournament will collect the prize package of $700,000, and the championship trophy, while the runner-up will receive $400,000 and the corresponding accolade.
The third and fourth place finishers will walk away with $200,000 and $100,000 respectively. The other sponsors of the event are MVP Sport, Nigel Hinds Financial Services, Andrews Supermarket, Bold Expressions Barbershop, Fireside Grill ‘N’ Chill, Star Party Rentals, and Lucozade.
