Vergenoegen won the Youth Basketball Guyana (YBG) West Demerara, Mini Regional Secondary Schools Tournament, whipping Leonora 30-8 in the final on Thursday.
Quan Jackman registered a double-double of 15 points and 11 rebounds while Kareen Gilkes chipped in with 12 points. For the losers, Daniel Williams recorded five points.
In the third-place playoff, West Demerara defeated Stewartville 20-13. J. Richards tallied 11 points and seven rebounds, while B. Nurse added nine points. For the losers, Joshua Leander scored nine points and six rebounds.
In the earlier matches, Vergenoegen dismissed Stewartville 21-9. Jackman led the way with a double-double of 10 points, and 13 rebounds while Gilkes added six points and five rebounds. Leander registered figures of four points and seven rebounds.
Leonora defeated West Demerara 22-13 Trevaughn Parris tallied eight points, and nine rebounds, while Joshua Medouze added six points.
For West Demerara, J. Richards, and B. Nurse netted seven and six points respectively.
According to an official release from the YBG, “The one-day tournament aimed to provide those schools who have expressed interest in participating in this year’s National School Basketball Festival to test their skills locally among the schools in their region and determined a ranking system for the NSBF(Festival) 2022.”
The release added, “The mini regional tournament format will continue as a lead-up to this year’s NSBF for schools in Linden, Berbice, East Bank Demerara, East Coast Demerara, and Georgetown.”
