Paul DeNobrega warmed up nicely for this weekend’s Independence Three-Stage Road race with a victory in the Team Alanis’ sponsored event yesterday staged around the outer circuit of the National Park
The Team Evolution standout, clocked 1:53.15 for the 20-lap Memorial fixture which was staged in honour of former junior rider, Jason Choowenam.
DeNobrega led breakaway mates, Walter Grant-Stuart and Deeraj Garbarran across the line in a three-man sprint finish after they broke away from the peloton with eight laps to go.
Andre Green, Curtis Dey and Kemuel Moses filled out the top six rewarding positions while Suzanne Hamilton and Clavecia Spencer were the top two finishers in the female category.
Grant-Stuart, Alex Mendes and Paul Choowenam were the top three veterans while Ian Jackson pedaled in first once again in the Over-50 class.
Adjani Cutting, Mario Washington and Arjoon Sukhai finished 1, 2, 3 in the junior category.
Meanwhile the Guyana Cycling Federation (GCF) annual Youth and Culture Three-Stage road race is scheduled for Saturday and Sunday.
Cyclists are asked to register at Singh’s Accounting and Tax Office, on Camp Street. Eybo Orford can be contacted on 625-0364 to complete registration.
The colorful prestigious 165-mile event which will celebrate its 39th year, commences 7:30am in the Town of Corriverton and proceeds to New Amsterdam for the finish (40 miles).
At 14:00 hours on the same day, the second stage rides off at New Amsterdam and journeys to CARIFESTA Avenue for the finish (60 miles).
The third stage starts in the town of Linden and will conclude in Georgetown (65 miles) where the presentation of prizes will be done on Homestretch Avenue.
Guyana’s longest tenured cycling event encompasses the elite, open veterans, juniors, and the female categories. A Surinamese team is scheduled to compete.
