The 20-year-old woman of Providence, East Bank Demerara (EBD) who tried to extort $10 million from her ex-boyfriend back in 2021 was today remanded to prison on a charge of escaping from police custody.

Princess Williams appeared before Principal Magistrate, Sherdel Isaacs-Marcus, at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court where she pleaded not guilty on a charge of escaping from custody.

It was stated that on May 7, 2022, at New Market Street, Georgetown, Williams escaped whilst being in the custody of a police officer.

The prosecutor objected to bail given the two pending matters which Williams currently has in the courts and one of which she was found guilty of.

The magistrate concurred, bail was denied and the woman was remanded to prison.

Williams will make her next court appearance to face the charge of escaping from custody, on June 1st, 2022.

According to the facts heard by the court, on the day in question, the defendant was in custody at the East La Penitence Police Station when she complained of feeling unwell.

As a result, a female officer was assigned to take her to the Georgetown Public Hospital (GPH) in order for her to seek medical attention.

However, when Williams was finished being attended to by the medical staff, she asked to use the washroom for which the officer granted permission. It was then when the woman escaped.

An alarm was raised and a search was launched.

The defendant was later found on Thomas and Lamaha streets, with a cloth wrapped around her hands hiding the handcuffs. She was cautioned and told of the new offence she had committed.

In court today, the woman said that she had marks of violence about her body. She said that while she was back at the station, she was chased along the hallway by the same officer and alleged that the officer hit her.

That claim was however rebutted by a female officer at the court, who said Williams’ body was examined and no mark of violence was observed.

Williams had appeared before Magistrate Rondell Weaver last Friday, where she was found guilty of extortion after a trial and remanded to prison. She had been charged with extorting $10 million from her ex-boyfriend, Kenrick Thomas, between January 4 and January 6, 2021.

Sentencing for the said matter was set for June 6, 2022.

A probation report was ordered by the Magistrate.

Williams had made her first, unrepresented court appearance for that matter, on February 12, 2021, where she was remanded to prison, after pleading guilty.

However, at a second court hearing with her lawyer, she changed her plea to not guilty and was released on $100,000 bail.
