I am disappointed in our Prime Minister

Dear Editor,

I am saddened, surprised and disappointed in our Prime Minister. I am disappointed because this Prime Minister once held the position of Chief-of-Staff of the Guyana Defence Force and one assumed he would have taken that greatness into his new office. Last week, we listened to a statement coming from the top brass of the PPP blaming the PNC led Coalition for the woes of the National Insurance Scheme, ignoring the fact that it was the PPP that started the hemorrhage and weakening of the N.I.S while in office in the 90s. Member of Parliament Volda Lawrence has dealt with this matter. But this seemed to be the latest weapon in the Government’s propaganda arsenal.

After 23 years in office and in office since August 2020, with an excess of forty billion dollars transferred from the Natural Resource Fund to the Treasury and therefore available to this Government, the Prime Minister’s Office blames the recent spate of blackouts on the Coalition Government. This statement fools no intelligent Guyanese. My advice to this young man is, as we say, enjoy the perks of office. These statements from the Prime Minister’s office constitute an embarrassment.

This young man must be reminded of the puppy who became famous on the old gramophone record, in 1901 by the gramophone company limited. The phrase was coined in the late 1890s as the title of a painting depicting a terrier mixed dog, named Nipper listening to a wind-up disc gramophone and tilting his head. The records were branded ‘His Master’s Voice’. Intelligent people should be able to discern and not repeat “hook, line and sinker,” the words of the Master, and let us avoid a repeat of our history. Let us be men and not mice.

Sincerely,

Hamilton Green
