It must be with a sense of relief that the public now has reasonable access to the Head and Deputy Head of the General Register Office (Birth Certificate Office), GPO building. Additionally, from all reports, most of the Supervisors are also very helpful.
I had reason to interact with a Ms Khan during that Organization’s outreach at Enmore and I was positively impressed. It is my humble view that, subject to legal requirements being met and/or due guidance given to the public, matters of obtaining birth certificates, corrections to erroneous entries, etc. should not be the nightmare it used to be. Sadly, however, the same cannot be said for many Government organizations… the NIS stands out.
At the Melanie Office, while some senior officers guide the public, many counter staff “push around” old people as if they are “foot cloth”. I know because I see hard evidence on a regular basis. NIS Inspector Thomas at that location is regarded as a gem by the public. People praise her because of her down-to-earth yet professional approach to her job. The same cannot be said for many other staff. We are in an era in Guyana where public servants must render service to the public – without regard to ethnicity or age or ability to “lef a raise”. We are on the move forward. This unsavoury behaviour must stop. Ministers and HODs, step on the pedal of justice and fair-play. Release those who embarrass the system.
